Stephen Hopkins was born on March 7, either 1706 or 1707, in Providence, Rhode Island, to William and Ruth (Wilkinson) Hopkins. His paternal great-grandfather, Thomas Hopkins, came to Providence in 1641 from Plymouth, Massachusetts.
