"Some people spend an entire lifetime wondering if they made a difference in the world. But, the Marines don't have that problem."
– Ronald Reagan

The United States Marine Corps was conceived on this day in 1775 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania when Captain Samuel Nicholas set up the first recruiting station in Tun Tavern. Tun Tavern was located on the corner of Tun Alley and Water Street. Today that area is in the path of IH 95 just off of Front Street. There is a historical marker where the tavern originally stood.
The Marine Corps has had a long a storied history, but many do not know that it was disbanded for a brief time before being reformed again. At the end of the American Revolution with the 1783 Treaty of Paris both the Continental Navy and the Marine Corps were disbanded. However, in 1798 they were re-established and would be sent to participate in the Quasi War before being sent to Tripoli to deal with the Barbery pirates.
The Marines would fight various battles over the years to protect America and its interest. Notable battles include but are not limited to Belleau Woods where we got the nickname Devil Dogs, and Guadalcanal. Since our inception, we have fought in every major American war or skirmish and have done so proudly! The Marines are so well respected that it is said even the Iraqi Revolutionary Army during the Gulf War would put down their arms when confronted by US Marines.
Today they continue to serve the United States proudly here and abroad by being the first in to fight, protecting our embassies as well as our President. To become a Marine and wear the eagle, globe and anchor is an accomplishment that few achieve but those who do are some of the finest fighting men and women who are loyal not only to their beloved Marine Corp but also to America and their fellow marines whether actively serving, separated or retired from service.
To all Marines out there, Happy Birthday, job well done and thank you!
