Plimouth Plantation

Several years ago, I took my daughter to visit Plimouth Plantation in Plymouth, Massachusetts, and the experience was amazing.

Some background information on this wonderful attraction. The Plantation is the brainchild of Henry Hornblower, who started the museum with two English cottages, along with a fort on Plymouth's waterfront. This was his boyhood dream - telling the story of the Pilgrims and how they lived. Since then, the museum has grown to include a variety of other exhibits, including the Wampanoag Homesite, the Mayflower II, and the expansion of the village itself to include many homes and meeting house, and other buildings that would have been present in the original town of Plymouth.

In addition to visiting the buildings and listening to interpreters speak of the individuals who lived there, you and your children can also engage in activities that they would have done in the 17th century. It is a fantastic experience for kids of all ages.

Upon entering the Plantation, we were confronted with authentic replicas and interpreters dressed in period costume that also behaved in a 17th-century manner. It was such a wonderful experience for my daughter, who was 7 at the time. She learned directly from the interpreters what a day in the life of a Pilgrim was like and even asked them if they knew what a tomato was. True to form, the Pilgrim lady asked her what a tomato was! I was completely impressed with the experience and would encourage parents to take their children there to learn and experience this wonderful living history museum.
