A few years ago, I had the opportunity to spend some time in Savannah, GA with a good friend of mine. IT was a wonderful weekend of walking, laughing, learning and good food. We visited many historic places and one of them was the Andrew Low House.
Andrew Low was the father-in-law of Julia Low, founder of the Girl Scouts. Julia Gordon Low created the Girl Scouts in 1912 initially calling it the Girl Guides. You can learn more about her at girlscouts.org. But here is a brief overview: She was born in 1860 and would pass away in 1927. She wanted to create a place where girls could get together and share their creativity with each other. She was inspired to start the group after meeting the founder of the Boy Scouts - Sir Robert Baden-Powell in Longdon. Fun fact - her middle name was Daisy.
Her childhood home still stands in Savannah, GA and it is a stunning building, it is near the Andrew Low House and is part of the Julia Godon Low Historic district. However, I visited the Andrew Low Home which is named after her father-in-law. Julia would live in this home for a significant time before her death in 1927. The home itself was built in the 1840's and is an historic landmark that has been carefully preserved for future generations to learn about. It is a beautiful building and gives us insight into what life was like in the 1850's for the people living there. To learn more about it please visit their website at www.andrewlowhouse.com. For now enjoy the pictures.
