On a trip to Boston in 2011 as I walked around with my girls visiting different historical sites, we came across this unique garden outside of Old North Church in Boston.
It was installed to commemorate those killed in the Afghanistan and Iraqi Wars. It consists of the dog tags representing the number of military personnel killed during the war and a bronze plague and poppy wreath that commemorates the death of British and other commonwealth military personal were added in 2018.
I can say that when we first spotted it, it took my breath away and was a great opportunity to teach my girls about the sacrifices of ordinary individuals in order for Americans to live in this great country. Even though there are no names listed on the individual dog tags, each tag represents a person who once lived, had families and greatly love the United States - enough to give their lives for it.
So, the next time you visit Boston, take the time to see the small memorials that sometimes go unnoticed in the shadow of the American Revolution monuments.
