This is what remains of the Saluda Factory located in Columbia SC near the Columbia Zoo. It is the site of an old textile factory built in 1834 when SC General Assembly chartered the Saluda Manufactory Co.
Starting in 1839, financial demands forced the owners to sell the mill, and it would be sold two more times over the next 16 years.
During Sherman's devasting march to divide the Confederacy in 1865. the mill was burned to the ground. Ironically General Sherman launched his invasion of Columbia from the site.
While it would be rebuilt after the Civil War, it burned down again in 1886 and was never rebuilt. The mill ruins and property would change hands twice before South Carolina Electric and Gas acquired the property in 1911. "In 1970, SCE&G agreed to lease its riverfront property to the Riverbanks Park Commission for $1 per year for 99 years, and four years later, Riverbanks Zoo opened its gates."
